GivEnergy and Growatt are the two most common hybrid inverter brands in UK home-battery installs, and both end up at the top of the shortlist for households on Octopus Agile. They are direct competitors in the 5–10 kWh hybrid range and the spec sheets read very similar — the meaningful differences are in the software you live with day to day.

This piece is for someone choosing between the two, or already running one and wondering whether the other side is greener. It focuses on the bits that matter for tariff-aware scheduling, not raw kWh ratings.

Schedule control: where each one lands

Growatt exposes a charge-time table on the inverter with up to 9 slots on the MIN range and 3 charge + 3 discharge slots on the SPH range. Slots are written through the ShinePhone API as time-of-day windows; the inverter applies them daily. Once you understand the slot table, control is precise.

GivEnergy uses a higher-level preset model: separate timed-charge, timed-discharge and timed-export presets, each accepting a list of HH:mm slots. Newer Gen3 firmware supports up to 10 slots per direction, so there is more headroom for interleaved schedules.

For a typical Agile household running one cheap-window charge plus one peak-window discharge, both are perfectly capable. Growatt SPH and GivEnergy land in the same place — three slots per direction is enough for almost everything the optimiser wants to express.

Auth and onboarding

Growatt uses your ShinePhone username and password — the same credentials you log into the app with. That keeps onboarding simple but ties cloud access to the password you use everywhere; many users set up a dedicated installer account for cleanliness.

GivEnergy uses an API token you generate in the portal (Account Settings → Manage API Tokens). The token is scoped, revocable, and decoupled from your portal login. For households who care about minimising credential blast radius, this is the cleaner model.

App and visibility

Growatt’s ShinePhone app is functional but visually dated; the cloud portal exposes the same data with more depth. Live readings refresh roughly every five minutes.

GivEnergy’s app and portal are more polished and refresh in near-real-time. For households who like watching the dashboard, GivEnergy feels meaningfully nicer.

For a tariff-aware scheduler running unattended, the app polish matters less than the API. Both have stable APIs that ShiftCharge talks to directly.

Firmware updates and the BST/GMT trap

Both vendors ship firmware updates regularly. Growatt updates can change the slot-write path in ways that need adapter work; GivEnergy presets have stayed shape-stable across firmware versions.

Both inverters interpret schedule slot times in the site’s local timezone, so the same DST-handling discipline applies on both. A scheduler that does the UTC↔local conversion correctly handles the clock change without manual intervention; one that does not silently shifts every slot by an hour twice a year. This is not a brand difference, but it is worth knowing about.

Which to pick

If you have not bought yet: GivEnergy edges it on software polish and API ergonomics, Growatt edges it on installer base and price. Both work fine on Agile with a half-decent scheduler.

If you already own one, do not switch. The savings on Agile are set by the tariff and your load shape, not the brand. Replace your scheduler before you replace your inverter.

Common questions

Does ShiftCharge support both?
Yes. Growatt is the most-tested integration today; GivEnergy is in open beta. The planner is the same engine — Octopus Agile prices, solar forecast, learned demand — and the brand-specific bits are confined to the adapter that talks to the inverter.
Is one quieter than the other?
In practice the inverter fans on both ranges are barely audible during normal operation. If acoustics matter, ask your installer for the model-specific dB rating — the variation within a brand is bigger than the variation between them.
Which is easier to extend later?
Both support modular battery additions within their own ecosystem. GivEnergy’s Gen3 stack and Growatt’s SPH range both add capacity in 2.5–5 kWh increments. The bigger constraint is usually inverter rating and house wiring, not the brand.
