Octopus Agile vs Cosy vs Go: which tariff suits a battery owner?
Side-by-side comparison of Octopus Agile, Cosy and Go for UK homes with a battery — what each tariff rewards and which fits which setup.
Join the betaOctopus offers three smart tariffs that battery owners commonly consider: Agile, Cosy and Go. They reward very different patterns of use, so the right tariff depends on your kit and your habits, not which one looks cheapest on a single day.
Octopus Go
Go gives you a fixed cheap window overnight — typically four to five hours — and a fixed daytime rate the rest of the time.
Best for: simple setups, EV owners, and anyone who wants predictable bills. A battery on Go is straightforward to schedule because the cheap window is the same every night.
Octopus Cosy
Cosy has multiple cheap windows through the day — typically a morning slot, an afternoon slot, and an overnight slot — with an expensive evening peak.
Best for: heat pumps and homes that need to load-shift across the whole day. A battery on Cosy benefits from being topped up multiple times.
Octopus Agile
Agile prices change every half hour and are published the day before. The price can go negative on windy nights and spike during cold snaps.
Best for: flexible homes with a battery and a willingness to automate. The savings ceiling is the highest of the three, but realising it requires daily replanning.
How to pick
Pick Go if you want the simplest answer and have an EV.
Pick Cosy if you have a heat pump or do most of your load shifting through the day.
Pick Agile if you have a battery, you are happy to let an automation make the decisions, and you want the highest ceiling on savings.
Common questions
- Can I switch tariffs to chase savings?
- Yes. Octopus allows tariff switches without long lock-ins. The cost is the disruption to whatever automation you have set up, so it is worth modelling before you switch.
- Does ShiftCharge support all three?
- Yes. The planner is tariff-shape aware: it adapts to whichever cheap-window pattern your tariff exposes, including Agile’s half-hourly prices, Cosy’s multi-window pattern, and Go’s single overnight window.
